RESEARCH INTERESTS & BACKGROUND:John’s research experience and interests are in landscape genomics and applied molecular ecology. For his dissertation, he’s working on a landscape genomic project on two sympatric Montana garter snakes looking at 1) biogeography and speciation since the last glacial period; 2) current land use and connectivity; and 3) adaptive genomic variation.  

John completed his MS at Michigan Technological University, where he worked on population genetics of Lake Superior lake trout and lake whitefish, as well as potential toxicity from copper mining byproducts drifting into an important spawning reef. 

 Prior to that, he received his B.A. from The College of Wooster (Ohio) in Biology and Environmental Studies and completed a thesis on conservation of the state-listed Blanchard’s cricket frog. He is still involved in long-term monitoring at the species’ range edge in northwest Ohio.
